Neurological Conditions

From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, your condition is a result of stagnation or blockage. You may have tried many treatments from traditional medicine and wish to try a natural treatment with less reliance on pharmaceuticals. Your conditions or side-effects from treatments may leave you exhausted, with disturbed sleep and the inability to enjoy activities that bring you joy.

I have had success in relieving pain and improving decreased function from a range of neurological conditions including:

Migraines and Other Headaches. Common symptoms include over-sensitivity to light and sound, pain behind the eye and episodes where you are completely unable to function.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Common symptoms include pain throughout your body, disturbed sleep, and incapacitating fatigue.

Stroke. After you’ve suffered a stroke, you may have paralysis, become flacid on one side of the body, or lose function in one of the limbs.

How I Treat Neurological Conditions

Throughout your treatment you can expect me to treat you with compassion and understanding.

I will begin your treatment with a thorough interview asking questions such as:

  • What were the circumstances at the time your pain began?
  • Which activities make it worse or better?
  • Does it impact your sleep or digestion?
  • What treatments have you tried? With what results?

We then review your general habits and lifestyle.

After the interview, I gather information essential to Chinese medicine by checking your tongue and your pulse. I also check your posture and range of motion. You then lie on a table where I’ll palpate (press on) any area that is problematic as well as related channels. (Channels are pathways through which qi and blood move through the body.)

From this assessment, I will gain a picture of the imbalances in your body as well as the specific dynamics of your chief complaint. Based on my findings, I will draw on my decades of experience to choose points to insert the acupuncture needles. The needles are very thin and you can learn more about what to expect and how acupuncture works here.

Results:

Generally, you can expect to feel some relief after one session but the results may not last without further treatments.. The best results can be expected with an initial course of treatment of sessions (an hour each) twice a week for two to three weeks. If your condition is new that may give you permanent relief. On the other hand, if you are suffering from chronic cyclic complaints, treatment usually takes longer.

The impact of acupuncture is often augmented by suggestions for improved body mechanics and self-care.

Stroke Treatment

Using electrical stimulation via a battery operated unit attached to the needles. These electrical impulses are sent through areas of the scalp that reflect the brain structure while the affected areas are mobilized. This treatment can be quite transformative with just a few sessions and is most helpful if started in the first few weeks after the stroke.
